compressor runs but will not build air pressure

7 years 2 months ago #2182 by marc
I have a craftsman oil bath electric air compressor model # 921.166380 will not build air pressure. I replaced the gaskets head gasket, valve plate gasket, upper cyl. gasket, and lower cyl. gasket with no luck still will not build pressure. When i pulled it apart the head gasket was partially gone so i figured that was the problem. I did not replace the reed valves maybe the problem?? I don't know what a bad reed valve looks like. Thanks for the post Marc!

I would say replace the Reed Valves. They are made of spring steel and it could be they're simply worn out, so as to not close completely on the valve plate when they're supposed to.

Since you replaced all of the gaskets, the only other component that creates compression are the Reed Valves, so I would replace them.

You can find the parts breakdown for this unit on the below site:

Also, make sure you have a clean air filter, this will ensure particulates don't pass into the head and damaged the gaskets or get stuck in the valves.
