I bought this machine in 2011 and it always leaked a little in a joint someplace and it always started and ran to refill. Now it trys to start, the lights in garage dim and it may turn over 1.5-3 revolutions but that is it. I have direct wired it to see if it was the pressure switch and it does the same thing. If it is the motor that is shot I can buy a new compressor for the same or less than the replacement motor. What I would like to know is could the "start capacitor" or "run capacitor" be the problem. the replacement part for these are about $40 + shipping. please I would like some advice on this.

Thank you for the inquiry!

What you may have is a Check Valve problem. It's the most common problem with any compressor, typically the check valve won't seal the air off in the tank like it should and back feed all of the tank pressure to the pump, thereby putting back pressure on the pump head. Of course when this happens it usually bogs the motor down and may trip your breaker.

Here's a nice video and text document on how to confirm if it's the Check Valve causing the problem or not:

This is the first place to look. If the problem persists after you clean out the C.V. or replace it, you may certainly have a defective start capacitor (most likely) or run capacitor (less likely). I would start with the C.V. and go from there.

I hope this helps,
