compressor turns over real hard was created by steveross
I have a sanborn 1 stage air compressor. It was tipped on it's side for 1/2 hour. Now the compressor motor turns over real hard. The electric motor will not turn it but it turns over by hand. I can't see any damage externally and the oil level is ok. Any tips would really be appreciated. Thanks alot !

Thanks for the post!

If it tipped on the Flywheel side of the Pump, then it the pump shaft could have been slightly bent and now is out of whack; it doesn't take much, honestly.
The Crank Bearings could be jammed in the Bearing Housing as well, the jolt from the fall could cause the bearings to become cock-eyed in the bearing housing of the pump.

Also just be safe, take the Belt off of the Pulley & Flywheel and make sure they both spin by hand without much resistance. You'll obviously get a bit of resistance from the Pump as it will be compressing, but you should easily be able to turn it over by hand.

Once you confirm the pump turns over by hand and the shaft or bearings aren't warped/bent/damaged, then look at the electric motor. The motor starter switch could be damaged or possibly a start capacitor was damaged.
You can find out test the motor capacitors by clicking on this link:

Or watch this video:

Also, here's how to clean the Starter Switch on the motor, may be a good idea:

Hope this helps!
